Why Success Addiction isn’t Always Good
July 15, 2023

Success Addicts are so preoccupied with their goals that they miss out on life’s pleasures and experiences outside of their work. While there’s nothing wrong with being highly ambitious and constantly striving to achieve great things in life, turning it into an obsession or addiction can have detrimental consequences on your well-being and happiness.
Obsession with success creates a tunnel vision in which you become narrowly focused on your goals and neglect other important aspects of life. In this piece, we explain why chasing success at any cost isn’t always good and ways to cope.
Burnout situation
Constantly striving to achieve more and pursue higher goals, without taking time to rest or recharge, can lead to a burnout situation. These mounting levels of stress negatively impact both your physical and mental health.
Your body can’t function like a machine, so you need to give it episodes of rest and recuperation. Taking short breaks, practicing meditation, yoga, reading good books and at times doing nothing at all can refresh and recharge you for the next chunk of work.
Strained relationships
The obsessive pursuit of success can compel you to prioritize your career or goals over personal relationships. This causes friction in friendships, family ties, and romantic partnerships, which can leave you feeling frustrated and lonely.
The key is to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Where work is sacrosanct, dedicating time and interest towards your loved ones is also important. Spend quality time with your family on weekends and go on short vacations once in a while.
Comparison and envy
The constant race towards success can lead to excessive comparison with others and emanate feelings of envy and jealousy. This may lure you into unethical ways such as stepping on someone’s toes for your own benefit to forge ahead. This blind pursuit of success can damage your reputation and integrity too.
Remember that true success is not measured by external achievements or by comparing it with others. Refrain from comparing yourself to others, and instead focus on your own growth and well-being instead.
Fear of failure
In the relentless pursuit of success, you may struggle to cope with failure or setbacks. The resultant feelings of worthlessness or depression can come in your way of taking necessary risks or exploring new opportunities.
Understand that failure is a natural part of life and is a stepping stone to success. Embracing failure allows you to learn from your mistakes and grow resilient as a person.
To brisk it up, success is not the sole defining factor of one’s self-worth. While ambition and drive are essential for growth and achievement, it’s crucial to set realistic goals and maintain a balanced approach between work accomplishments and personal fulfillment.
