Get rid of Your Inner Enemies in 2025
December 26, 2024

In a world shaken by war and political chaos, let us choose to welcome the new year with higher thinking and deeper understanding to ensure peace and unity. While we cannot control the commotion around us, we hold the power to transform ourselves and our family — the basic unit of love and unity. Peace and harmony begin within our homes and when the family thrives in love and understanding, this energy radiates to neighbourhoods, communities and beyond.
I know for a fact how children who grow up in violent homes deeply long for calm, peace and understanding. Those who grew up with self-centered parents yearn for unconditional love. Those who have gone hungry treasure even the simplest meals of bread and butter. It’s only by introspecting and reflecting inward and confronting our inner battles that we can bring change within ourselves. And when you change you set an example for those around you.
As we make new year resolutions for the fast-approaching 2025, I urge you to pause and reflect:
Can we pledge to get rid of the enemies within us? Can we replace the vices of anger, hatred, ego, jealousy and selfishness with virtues like tolerance, neutrality, humility, gratitude and empathy?
By addressing these inner battles, we lay the foundation for meaningful change within ourselves.
Overcome anger with distance and time
Anger is just one letter short of danger and in moments of rage, our words and actions can hurt like sharp-edged weapons. During heated arguments, try stepping away to allow space and time. With distance and the passing of time, anger often loses its power and tolerance takes over. Just as the dirt in muddy waters gradually settles revealing the crystal-clear water above, your anger and resentment fade with time and your thoughts become clear, streamlined and focused.
Move from hatred to neutrality
While you may love some, it’s easy to harbour hatred for a few who wronged you. But is it worth carrying such a heavy burden in your heart? Instead, practice neutrality. Choose to be indifferent, grounded and at peace with yourself. Those who see through you will eventually come around; for those who don’t, accept that not everyone’s approval is integral to your happiness. Try to remain balanced just like in neutral gear and whenever possible choose to help.
Let go of ego with esteem and humility
Most conflicts stem from ego and pride. Can you put aside your ego and decide to adopt a higher mindset thinking? Focus on the bigger picture — a mindset where relationships and dealings with others take precedence over personal pride or ego. Knowing your self-worth and being humble build bridges and paves the way for connections.
Replace jealousy with gratitude
Jealousy arises from comparisons, but does one need to compare with others? Contentment comes when you appreciate the graces you and your family have (Your Share of Blessings). When you choose gratitude, you find joy and satisfaction in what you have and count your blessings. A highly contended person radiates positive vibes and energy to others. When you decide to be thankful and happy come what may, no power can snatch that happiness from you.
Defeat selfishness with empathy
Selfishness narrows your world, but empathy expands it. Can you put aside “I, me and myself” and become more empathetic towards others? By stepping into someone else’s shoes, you gain a better realization and become more compassionate. This not only fosters wider understanding but also nurtures genuine relationships. An empathetic person always becomes a source of comfort and support for others.
By getting rid of these inner vices, you liberate your soul’s true potential. Embracing virtues like harmlessness in thoughts and deeds, detachment from materialism and gratitude for life’s bounties can free you from unnecessary misery. It leads you to immense joy and fulfillment in your life.
As we prepare to greet the approaching year and make resolutions, let’s strive to be better and more refined versions of ourselves. Let’s cultivate love, thankfulness, and empathy so we can spread them to our family, the people we meet and the world outside.
