Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Feature Evaluation

Multi-Subnet Failover Clustering

The SQL Server 2012 can be connected to different subnets which in turn are spread out to different geographical locations providing disaster recovery with high availability. With the SQL server you can configure the server where failover nodes can be connected to a completely different subnet. This data will have to be replicated across databases involved in this configuration to ensure the sever works correctly.

The Windows Server failover cluster will have to be set up first as the SQL Server is dependant on this. All the subnets must be in the same Active Directory domain.

Ad-Hoc Query Paging

The Order By option in the SQL SELECT statement has been enhanced in SQL Server 2012.

Using a combination of OFFSET and FETCH along with ORDER BY gives you control of paging through a result set. Using this technique can really help performance by bringing back only the results you want to show to your users when they are needed.

Full Text Search

The Full Text Search in SQL Server 2012 has been enhanced to allow users to search and index data stored in extended properties or metadata.

For instance, a PDF document has “properties” filled in like Name, Type, Folder path, Size, Date Created, etc. So when a search is run, the SQL Server picks up the internally saved data and not just data within the document itself.

BI and Web Development Environment Improvements

BISM is a relation model that includes BI artifact such as KPIs and hierarchies.

It will enhance Microsoft’s front end analysis experiencing including Excel, Reporting Services, SharePoint Insights and PowerPivot tool which helps users create self-services reporting models. Analysis Services will include a new BI Semantic Model (BISM), in a 3-layer model that includes:

  • Data Model
  • Business Logic
  • Data Access

As per Microsoft, BISM is not intended to replace the current BI Models but is more of an alternative model. For more on PowerPivot click here.

Web Based Visualization – Project Crescent

Project Crescent is the Microsoft code name for the new reporting and visualization tool expected in SQL Server 2012. It allows users to share visualizations or large datasets through interactive story boarding and also includes a powerful query tool.

Project Crescent provides a drag and drop ad-hoc reporting functionality and was built entirely on Silverlight.

Data Quality Services

Data Quality Services is a knowledge-based approach that runs in SSIS (SQL Services Integration Services). As a quality service, it is one of those things that is constantly being perfected.

Microsoft’s introduction of “Impact Analysis and Lineage” focuses on giving information about what your data depends on. It also shows the lineage of the data, including where it comes from and the systems that are behind it.
